Grown-Up Gigs Full-Time Artist

Grown-Up Gigs Full-Time Artist Keep Out of the Cookies (an animation) from Jessica Gonacha Swift on Vimeo. SO cute adorable! How is it that Grown-Up Gigs has yet to feature a full-time artist? The travesty! The most simple but seemingly most elusive career for a creative person (not necessarily a full-time artist but a full time insert-creative-starving-artist-profession-here), Jessica Gonacha Swift has been doing it for six years with amazing results. I dont know how I found my way to Jess work initially, but when I saw it I immediately swooned its bright sweet quirky insightful so unique personal. In getting to know Jess by being her coach friend, she continued to inspire me with her words her actions. Besides bringing her into Spring, I knew I needed to dig a little deeper ask her some grown-up questions. Youre welcome. 1. You are an artist who makes her living pays her rent, feeds herself, buys adorable clothes doesnt live hand to mouth solely from selling your illustrations patterns. Thats so beyond the realm of The Possible by so many of us who are stuck in traditional jobs (or traditional families!). What advice can you give to those Grown-Ups out there who think,   Ill never be able to pay the bills by being an artist? Wow, you make what I do sound so cool! I guess my only real advice is to   not listen to those people who tell you you cant do it for one reason or another. Because you absolutely CAN. I say, dont we all have a responsibility to do the things that make us truly joyful in this life? Who made the rule that a job isnt supposed to be fun? Also, the world NEEDS artists. Can you imagine a world without anything pretty or decorative? Without images that make you think and question? Everything would be so   boring and dull so if artists are so necessary, why shouldnt we be able to make a living giving our talents to the world? If you are passionate about what you do and want to share it with the world, then there is an audience for you. You can do it. 2. How did you take the leap into being a full-time artist? Feel free to discuss the emotional and/or the tangible! Well, I didnt have a real plan, thats for sure. Basically, I was waiting tables at a miserable restaurant, the managers were awful, I was beyond unhappy and unfulfilled, and I had to get out. Id gotten into a juried art show, and somehow I just decided that I was going to make as much art as I could for the show and make it happen on my own. Looking back I cant believe I made that leap so quickly, but Id gotten to the point of not being able to handle it for one more day. So I quit. And I painted in my bedroom. Literally, on the floor of my bedroom. And then the show came around a month or so later, and I made $5,000.00. It was exhilarating! I had no idea it was possible to make a living this way, and Id stepped into a world Id never been in before. I was 23 then, and I havent looked back since. Ive just known that I was going to make it on my own one way or another. Ive had a couple very part-time jobs here and there, but for the most part Ive been making a living as an artist for t he past 6 years. 3. In your opinion, whats the biggest roadblock to being a working   artist, how have you/are you rising above it? MONEY. Its hard not having a steady paycheck or knowing where the next project will come from. I have such fear around money, which makes me wonder why I chose such an uncertain path for myself! This makes me think theres a lesson in it for me, and the lesson is in trusting myself and trusting that the next project will always come. Up to this point, its all worked out well, so Im trying to just believe that its going to continue working out because im doing what I love! 4. What is your most favoritist part of your career? I love that I get to sit on the floor in my yoga pants and draw while other people are sitting at their desks, wearing high heels and blazers! I love making my own schedule, getting to take time off whenever I want to/need to (for example, I never have to get time off for the holidays approved by a boss, because I AM the boss!) And quite honestly, I just love that I get to make stuff all day. Its such a luxury. 5. Whats your biggest dream, how are you moving forward towards it? My biggest dream is to become a well-known designer, like Jonathan Adler or Orla Kiely. I want to create things that make people happy and feel good, and to have them available worldwide. I want to have my designs on all kinds of products and have my own shops around the world! Im creating a detailed vision of what I want my dream career to look like, researching manufacturing, and Ill be exhibiting at Surtex this coming May. Im also learning to believe that its possible to have wild success in my life! I dont think it can happen if I dont believe that it can, so this is a big first step.

How to Write a Resume on Fiverr

How to Write a Resume on FiverrIf you are starting to look for a job, you should consider going online and have a look at a new job writing site called Fiverr.com. There are many advantages to using these sites to help you get your new job. Most of them will cost very little and you can always save money by using the site to produce your own resumes. The first thing that will impress any employer is how well you deliver your resume to him in writing. You must be able to talk quickly, confidently and effectively. You must make sure that you put yourself into the shoes of the employer and what they are expecting from you as a future employee. Not all of us are good at this but it is possible to improve your skills to make your resume stand out.The site has a database of over a million jobs from a wide range of different companies, which makes it easy to find the job you want. You will be able to use words and phrases that others may not use or are used commonly and still make a compelli ng resume.Fiverr does charge a fee to submit your resume so you will have to consider that before you do. It is a small fee compared to other potential expenses you will have to take if you had to write the resume on your own. I know that some people are paid to make a resume and I would be one of them but I am pretty sure that it is better than having to make it on your own.The great thing about Fiverr is that you can turn the site into a business and you do not have to make a profit off it. The more people you have who work on it, the more likely you are to make a profit. Fiverr does pay some commission to those who are willing to work for them and help them out.It is very important that you know exactly what you are looking for in a job. When you are looking for a job, you need to do your homework to find something that has a lot of appeal. If you do not know what you are looking for, you will not know how you should create your resume to make it attractive. There are so many thin gs that you can do in your job search that will help you land a job. Writing a resume is not one of them. However, if you get some practice writing your own resume using Fiverr, you will probably find it easier to do than you would have without the advantage of this service.

Government Shutdown News Federal Workers Heading to Food Banks

Government Shutdown News Federal Workers Heading to Food Banks More than three weeks into the longest government shutdown in history, an influx of impacted federal employees and contractors have sought assistance from food banks around the country as they struggle to make ends meet without their paychecks. “We’ve been hearing from a lot of food banks that this is increasing by the day,” says Robert Campbell, policy director at Feeding America, which operates more than 200 food banks around the country. “Hunger is a symptom of a lack of resources, and that includes, of course, people’s livelihoods and income from their jobs.” An estimated 800,000 federal employees have missed at least one paycheck since the government shutdown began on Dec. 22. While Democrats and President Donald Trump have been sparring over a $5.7 billion funding proposal for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, some federal workers, who say they live paycheck to paycheck, have been applying for unemployment, struggling to provide for their families, and worrying about hefty medical bills and healthcare costs. Now the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, impacted federal employees and contractors are entering uncharted territory. Navigating the unfamiliar Over the weekend, more than 2,200 federal employees without pay visited pop-up markets organized by the Capital Area Food Bank around the Washington, D.C., area, says Radha Muthiah, the food bank’s CEO. There has been a 20% increase in calls over the last week or two, with some impacted federal employees and federally contracted workers reaching out for assistance with food for the first time, she says. “These are individuals who are not as familiar with how to navigate food assistance networks and asking questions about how to do so, where some of these food pantries might be, and if they qualify,” Muthiah says. “Many are just trying to juggle various bills they have to pay,” she adds, noting that many of these employees live paycheck to paycheck. There are around 362,000 federal employees living in the area the food bank serves, Muthiah says. Capital Area Food Bank, which provides supplemental food and nutritional needs to lower-income communities and those on food stamps, typically makes 3 million meals in the month of January. This month, however, they will provide 300,000 to 600,000 more. “This isn’t necessarily something we budgeted for,” Muthiah says. But suppliers, companies, and volunteers are offering more support in recent days as the shutdown grows more untenable. “This feels unique compared to prior shutdowns, and that’s why we’re being resourceful and creative,” she says. ‘Plan for the worst’ The flood of federal workers to food banks spreads beyond the nation’s capital. St. Mary’s Food Alliance in Phoenix gave out groceries to TSA employees working without pay at the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on Monday. Partnering with food banks and organizations in the area, the Tampa Bay International Airport is also gathering resources to help TSA employees. Major food banks in Massachusetts met on Monday to discuss how to best serve impacted employees and low-income residents who rely on their services in the wake of the shutdown. And the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is launching a program to help thousands of impacted employees in the state. Joe Arthur, the executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, says the organization has received more phone calls than usual in recent weeks. Starting Tuesday, the food bank will offer a specialized program for impacted federal employees and contractors in need of their assistance. It’s unclear how many employees in the state will take advantage of the program, Arthur says, but the food bank has prepared about 1,000 sets of groceries for impacted federal employees. “Always better to plan for the worst and hope for the best,” he adds. It’s a familiar situation for the food bank, too. Amid a months-long state budget impasse in 2009, the food bank assisted thousands of workers who were left without paychecks. Now, as the government shutdown drags into its fourth week, Arthur says the food bank may set up pop-up locations near the work sites of impacted federal employees, like those working in federal penitentiaries. “There are a lot of families that are using our assistance services or are a paycheck away from it,” Arthur says. “Now, we’re going to test that again.”

How To Pay The Bills While Pursuing Your Dream Career - Work It Daily

How To Pay The Bills While Pursuing Your Dream Career - Work It Daily Pursuing Your Dream Career As many of you already know, attaining success as an actor often depends upon being able to stick at it for long enough to get that “just right” opportunity, or to weather the dry seasons between right opportunities. But how can you pay the bills when you're pursuing your dream career? Related: 3 Reasons No Experience Will Land You That Dream Job It was my pleasure to give the keynote talk at the Educational Opportunities Fest and Education Fair last June, where I gave the attendees advice on identifying and creating a side pursuit or even a parallel career that's compatible to their acting. Pursuing Your Dream Career Here are some of the key points from my talk: Empower Yourself Decide right now that you are going to find a supplementary source of income that will work with your acting career and provide you some stability and personal satisfaction. You are not too old, too unqualified, or too whatever. You can and you will do it. Recognize What You Already Have Between your acting-related skills and your work experience, you already have marketable skills. From acting alone, you have communications skills, improvisational skills, listening skills, and probably some ability to read people. If you’ve managed to develop a following using the web, you also have computer skills and social media skills. If you’ve been producing your own content, such as a web series, you also have project management skills. Think Broadly At First Don’t try to pick a job title if that’s too daunting. Just identify what you like to do and what you’re good at and then explore options. Ask trusted friends and professional mentors what they could see you doing, or what jobs they know about that utilize X, Y, and Z skills. Go online and do Google broad searches like, “social media jobs in Los Angeles” or “professional training programs in Los Angeles.” Think like a detective and follow the paths that seem most appealing. Consider Going Back To School Once you identify jobs that you are interested in, consider getting further education. It doesn’t have to be a traditional degree program (though it can be). It can be as simple as learning a new computer program or as extensive as getting an MBA. Be A Small Business Owner Even if you are looking for a job within an organization and not freelance work, you should consider your career a small business. Always look for ways to diversify to bring in new revenue streams. Keep existing skills current and learn new ones. Network and create win-win relationships with others. Anticipate changes in the industry and be proactive in adjusting your path to reflect them. You are probably already treating your acting career this way, but you need to broaden it out to your professional career as a whole. The idea here is to create a livelihood that allows you to have the life you want, whether you fulfill your childhood dream or not. And acting itself might be more joyful and go better when you are not relying on it as your sole source of income or enduring a day job you don’t like in order to pursue it. Why Its OK to Work on the Weekends 10 Women Explain

Why Its OK to Work on the Weekends 10 Women Explain Not everyone is working for the weekend some of us are working on the weekends.A Gallup poll once suggested that the standard 40-hour week now lasts 47 hoursand, unsurprisingly,a lot ofthat extra working timegets jammed into the weekends. The fact is Over a quarter of Americans work night shifts andabout 30 percent work during the weekends, according to Forbes. And, for some, thats okay. While free time is necessary and a work-life balance is critical to ones health and productivity, some people prefer to work on the weekends or dont mind it when their weeks work spills over.1. You can be flexible during the week.I regularly work weekends, parteely because I love what I do and Im usually very motivated to get the next thing done, but also partly because I take advantage of the flexibility I have during the week, says Camille Lansiquot. I often take time out to attend to my childrens activities or school excursions, and of course tim e for personal appointments. To me, it feels like quite a balanced approach to work fruchtwein days, and adjust based on what else is happening. (The occasional day with no work at all is also nice sometimes though)2. You can spread work out.My small business is now 6 1/2 years old and I continue to believe that its ok to allow work to spill over into our weekends, says Julia Rohan, CEO and owner ofPTO rep at my kids school. And I volunteer in the dog rescue community as well as some other resist commitments. To fit it all in, plus invest in my own selfcare, I have to spread my work on to aSaturday andSunday and I feel really, really lucky to be able to do so.3. You can show respect.Working in public relations, I have to be on at all hours, saysSarah Johnson, the public relations directorfor FitSmallBusiness.com. I have journalists emailing me, sometimes calling me, at various times of the day, night, and yes, even during weekends. Timing is everything in news, so if I miss a call or an email, that means the company that Im trying to get publicity for misses out on a media opportunity. Sometimes the opportunity is with a very high-profile media outlet and, as a rule, I never want to keep a journalist waiting. Why is it ok for my work to spill over into weekends? Earlier in my professional career, I welches a broadcast journalist, then a magazine editor, so I know first hand how crucial it was for PR professionals to get back to me in a timely fashion. I was forever grateful to those publicists. Now that Ive been working in PR for a long time, I try to be incredibly accomodating to those in the media - even if that means answering their emails on weekends, or arranging for my co-founder to be interviewed during the weekend. In PR, its all about the relationships you forge with journalists, and I want to be seen as someone who these people can depend on when theyre on tight deadlines.4. Youcan have mora time with family during the week.My work almost always spill s over on the weekend and its 100 percent okay with me and heres why I work at home and am able to see the kids off to school, have breakfast with my husband, and be home when the kids get home from school, says Nicole Johnson of The Baby Sleep Site. I help with homework, make dinner, and get them to sport practices and games. My days are full, but it allows me to be very present in my familys life while also running a business from home. So, yes, I often have mora work to do on the weekend to make sure I get everything done that needs to. I prefer to work some every day than try to fit it all in during a work week. My business has been around for 10 years now, so I think its working pretty well.5. Its part of the bargain of running ones own business.Whats a weekend? asksAlison Blackman, editor-in-chief of Advice Sisters Beauty, Fashion Lifestyle.I am a writer and I work around the calendar. My husband who runs an economics consulting firm does the same thing. We know were kind of trapped in a work-a-holiclifestyle, but when you run your own business, its part of the bargain.6. You can take other days off.Our world has evolved into a24/7society,says Mary Papaleo, owner, florist and event designer forSaturday orSunday is completely acceptable now. Many prefer to have their days off during the regular work week to avoid congestion better rates at recreational locations. It also makes it somewhat easier to schedule medical and personal appointments when you work on weekends and have weekdays off. One of the ironic advantages of working weekends is that it allows parents to work in the classrooms of their children during the week a luxury that regular work week parents miss out on.7. You canspend your time how you want.Because I work for myself, have a home arbeitszimmer, live alone and answer only to me (and my clients), its totally my choice how I spend my time, saysDr. Gayle Carson. Like being able to go in there any time I want to do the things I like to do. Its my schedule and if I get a brilliant idea, I want to work on it. So for me its perfect as long as I dont let it take over my life.8. Itcan be calming.Throughout my career, I have had to work on weekends and holidays and, at times, even on vacation, saysJesse Harrison, founder and CEO of California Employee Rights Legal Group. For me, being the owner of a small business that is involved in law and client representation, there is almost no time that I can be cut off from everyone. I do not have the option to leave my work at my office my clients have my phone number and Im available around the clock to give legal help. If there are any developments in a case, I have an ethical duty to report such to my clients. Its more than just the nature of the work for me this is rooted in my dedication to my clients and its always been a part of my personality to go above and beyond what some might consider the standard duty expected of them. As such, I have learned to accept that working on the weekends happens sometimes, and it allows me to continue growing my business as Ive done for some time. Further, when I have to go in to the office on a weekend, I find the atmosphere more calming and relaxing I can get more done because there is virtually no hustle and bustle, no distractions, no phones ringing except my own. Ive needed to go prepare cases for trial and gather all sorts of documents to be mailed out, and coming in to the office on weekends makes it a simple taskon Monday. There is no rush and I can be confident that nothing is missing. On the other hand, I believe some workers should always establish boundaries on working weekends. Constantly being asked to come in for overtime can be draining, especially if the amount of work can be completed during the week. Many of my employees are in the office for nine hours a day, and I understand how important it is for them to go home, recharge, participate in their hobbies, and spend time with their friends and famil ies.9. Itcan be fun.My work spills over onthe weekends due to the fact that part of my job is managing social media, saysAlexandra Donlin, a marketing assistant. Since social media doesnt turn off on the weekends, that means Im posting on Saturdays and Sundays. This is totally fine with me because I love my job Its also a very minimal part of my weekend, so I still have plenty of time to decompress and unplug. I do also answer any urgent and important emails on weekends because I want to maintain a good relationship with my clients. If they need something done ASAP, Ill get it done.10. It can be tamer.I work for myself as a freelance writer and blogger, says Tracer Kaler. I often work on weekends because my inbox isnt flooded and I tend to take a break from social media so I can get writing projects finished. I dont love it, but I dont mind it so much either since I work for myself. I would not want to work weekends for anyone else--AnnaMarie Houlis is a multimedia journalist and an adventure aficionado with a keen cultural curiosity and an affinity for solotravel.
