5 signs you werent meant to be a leader of people
5 signs you werent meant to be a leader of people5 signs you werent meant to be a leader of peopleLeadership is a tricky topic. It requires an immense amount of experience in the trenches to learn the hard lessons. Its common for people to associate leadership with atitle.A CEO is a leader. The creative director is a leader. Even your manager is a leader. But thats not what leadership actually is. Leadership isnt a badge you wear or a hat you put on in certain situations - Time to step up and be a leaderIt goes back to the old clich Leaders lead byexample. They are leaders not because of what they have achieved or what fancy title they have before their name. They are leaders because of how they conduct themselves, and their ability to inspire people to do things they wouldnt do on their own.A lot of people think they are leaders - and thats the problem. Here are five signs you are spending more effort trying to be a leader than actually leading.1. You use your title as leverage. The mome nt you say, Do what I tell you because I am your director, the owner, your CEO, you may win the battle, but youve senfgas the war.You are no longer leading by example, and are instead trying to inspire through hierarchy. That may instigate action in the moment, but it will cause resentment down theroad.Just because you are in a certain position commonly associated with being a leader does not automatically result in leadership.2. You point the finger instead of pulling thethumb.A great leader knows that, at the end of the day, it all comes back around. If your employee or your business partner makes a mistake, yes, on some level they are accountable, but on another level their mistake may have been the result of a process or a request that you put forward. The truth is, it really doesnt matter how or why something goes wrong - thingshappen. What matters is how you, as a leader, react and move forward. And if you point out everyone elses mistakes without ever acknowledging your own role in the equation, the people around you will feel alienated.3. You are emotionally inconsistent. As an employee, there is nothing worse than not knowing whether today is a good day or a bad day. What prohibits great work and dramatically increases execution time is having to worry or wonder what sort of emotional reaction you are going to get from your leader. It may be that on some days, a very complicated question is handled with ease, and on other days, the simplest of questions throws the person into a fit of rage. These emotional inconsistencies are what create chaos in an office or work setting because nobody knows what to expect. As a leader, you are the rock, the foundation upon which it all co-exists and operates. Its a lot to carry, but that is why you are the leader. Deal with it.4. You dont keep yourword.Nothing destroys loyalty and follower-ship faster than saying you will do something and then not doing it.Your employees and associates will begin to question your ability to carry your own weight, no matter how much else you have on your plate. What you should do instead is be honest and admit, even as the leader of an organization or a small team, when you needhelp. There is no dignity in taking on responsibilities you ultimately cant fulfill.5. You focus on the bad and never highlight thegood. There is a fine line between inspiring greatness and tearing down motivation. If you focus only on the mistakes of the people around you, they will begin to feel as though everything they do is wrong. This is a recipe for disaster, both intrinsically and extrinsically. Yes, point out the mistakes and address them as needed. But do not overlook or devalue what they bring to the table the rest of the time.Hearing what you do well is just as important as hearing what you dopoorly.Otherwise, your employees or associates will be lost in the dark, unsure of how to best navigate themselves within your expectations. This piece originally appeared in Inc Magazine.

Benefits From Employee Paid Vacation Time
Benefits From Employee Paid Vacation TimeBenefits From Employee Paid Vacation TimeWhen employees take a paid vacation, both the employer and the employee benefit from employees using their paid vacation time. Americans receive (on average) less vacation time than European countries. For instance, Austria has between 25 days of mandatory vacation (which jumps to 30 if youve been there 25 years), plus, 13 holidays. All paid. Estonia has 20 vacation days, plus 11 paid holidays, for a total of 31. And what about our linguistic parent, the United Kingdom? 28 days of vacation time, no paid holidays required. And, the United States? Zero. By law, your employer doesnt have to give you any paid time off- bedrngnis for Christmas, bedrngnis for a beach trip, bedrngnis for anything. Most companies do, however, and the average worker took 16 days of vacation in 2013. So while the US isnt reaching European levels, paid vacation time is available. Just how should you use it? You can use your vacati on in any way that you want, but some ideas are better than others- for the employee and for the business. Here are ideas about how to use paid vacation time. Employers Benefit The employer experiences several significant benefits when employees take extended vacation time. It is your opportunity to take a look at how the employee is performing on the job through the eyes and access you provide to anotlageher employee. The US government strongly encourages (although it does not legally require) bank employees to take vacations. Why? To prevent fraud. Former criminal and current security consultant, Frank Abagnale, explains why in his book, The Art of the Steal How to Protect Yourself and Your Business from Fraud, Americas 1 Crime. Make people take vacations, especially the ones who handle your money and transactions records. Every employee has to be out of the office and without control over transactions for at least one week a year. Large embezzlement schemes, as I have already pointed out, often must be maintained daily, and key figures in the scheme will resist being away. If key employees never take a vacation, find out why. Dan Lewis, at Now I Know, shared this advice and the story of Toshihidi Iguchi, whose behavior caused a $1.1 billion dollar loss. Iguchi hadnt taken an extended vacation in 11 years. Its not that taking a vacation keeps you from becoming a thief its that it makes it harder to run a scam when youre not there to take care of it- all of the time. While many jobs dont involve handling money directly, every job has the potential for errors to build up. Having each employee out of the office for a week (or mora) without the ability to handle emails or log into their computer means that another employee has to handle it. That allows management to find out about performance problems and other issues before they grow too large. Thats why when employees take a whole week or more of vacation every business can benefit. (At a minimum, employee vacation timeforces you to cross-trainemployees and ensures that you have a backup plan for when employees quit their job.) At maximum, what benefits the employees who use their paid vacation time also benefits you. Employees Benefit You can see how the employer benefits when employees take extended vacation time but can a week or two away from the office benefit employees, too? Of course. Clinical psychologist Deborah Mulhern shared with ABC news that not only are vacations good now but if you dont take them, youll lose the ability to relax. She said Without time and opportunity to do this, the neural connections that produce feelings of calm and peacefulness become weaker, making it actually more difficult to shift into less-stressed modes, Mulhern said. What neuroscience is showing is that we require downtime in order for our bodies to go through the process of restoration. It is only when we are safe from external stresses that our bodies can relax enough to activate restor ation. Are Long Vacations the Only Way? No, long paid vacations are not important. What is important is the break. The Wall Street Journal says that whats important is the recharging Psychologists and researchers have been studying how to create an ideal vacation that boosts our well-being, relieves stress that can impact our health, and helps us recharge for returning to work. Some conclusions Longer vacations arent necessarily better than shorter ones. Engage in activities you havent done before, even if youre at home on a staycation. And end a trip on a high note. A short vacation can recharge you, as long as you arent just cleaning out your basement or helping your parents move into a nursing home. Thats a break from work, but not abreak from stress and thats what you need. You need that downtime to recharge and focus on your job. How Employers Can Encourage Employees to Take Paid Time Off As an employer, you have ways that you can use to assist your employees in taking advantage of their paid vacation time, including floating holidays. It behooves you, because of the above noted positive effects that employers and employees experience when employees use their paid vacation time, to make use of these ideas. Some companies (and many government jobs) allow employees to bank an unlimited amount of vacation time. When you quit, you get all of that accumulated vacation time paid out in cash. While lots of people love this idea, its not healthy in the long run. Employees need to get regular vacation time off. Rather than offering employees vacation time accumulation, companies should do two things Limit vacation accumulation and rollovers. While it isnt always practical for every person to use their allotted vacation time every year by December 31, you need to encourage employees to use paid vacation time and not reward them by allowing them to hoard it. Limit the number of days that will roll over into the next year.Provide paid disability leaves. One o f the reasons people hoard vacation time is so that they can afford to take time for a baby, or surgery, or an unexpected problem. Companies should think about how best to meet their employees needsfor these events without having them burn out when they never get a reasonable break from work. Employee Dos and Donts Employees should not do the following when using paid vacation time. Work. It is tempting to call into that meeting and respond to all emails, so you dont get behind, but then youre not on vacation, youre just working from somewhere else.Go into debt. You dont need a fancy trip to Disney World or the Caribbean to have time off count as a vacation. If you go into debt for your vacation, youre added stress back into your workday. Its better to do a staycation and go to the park than it is to accumulate debt in your attempt to relax.Use all vacation days for other obligations. Youre a good child, so you want to help out your aging parents, or move your child into their n ew dorm room at college. These activities are great- and essential components of every persons life. But, if you use all of your paidvacationtime to do other work (including cleaning your own basement), youll never get that chance you desperately need to relax. Employees should do the following when taking paid vacation time. Something fun. Its not relaxing if youre not having fun. What that fun is, varies from person to person. You may love hiking while another person may see that as a fate worse than death. Whats important is that you break your routine.Use your allotted vacation time. Its part of your compensation. Youd never voluntarily give up a chunk of your salary, but thats precisely what you are doing when you work for free- which is what employees who have use it or lose it vacation days do.Encourage your coworkers/employees to take their vacations. If you want a great vacation, then cover for your coworkers when they are out of the office. This makes it easier for everyo ne to take great vacation time when you have a supportive team. Vacation is actually a critical part of a good work-life balance. Make sure that you take your paid vacation time. Turn off your phone and have a good time. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance journalist specializing in Human Resources. 1 in 5 teachers are burdened by their housing costs
1 in 5 teachers are burdened by their housing costs 1 in 5 teachers are burdened by their housing costs Teachers, who do the invaluable work of educating children yet are paid untenably low salaries, are finding themselves increasingly crunched on housing costs. Nationwide, 19.9% of households where a teacher is the primary earner are burdened by their housing costs.âCost-burdenedâ is a term commonly used to measure financial stability. âThe rule of thumb is that you should be spending no more than 30% of your gross income on your housing costs, whether itâs your mortgage or monthly rent,â Chris Salviati, the author of the report, told Ladders. âPeople spending more than that are considered cost-burdened.âFollow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!According to Apartment Listâs estimations from a new study, teachers earn 25.7% less than other college-educated professionals nationwide. This is a 21.3% higher than the cost-burden rate for households where the primary earner is not a teacher but does have a college degree.Among primary-earner teachers who rent, the cost burden rate was 28.2% as of 2017, up from 24.5% in 2010. Preschool and kindergarten teachers are worse off than teachers in grade 1-12 classrooms, as they earn less. Preschool and kindergarten teachers who are primary earners have a cost-burden rate of 41.2%, more than double the rate for teachers as a whole.Out of the 25 largest metros, Miami has the highest cost-burden rate for teachers, at 35%, followed by San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Washington, D.C. âItâs in these places where teachers are really struggling,â said Salviati. Rents are going up in coastal hubs that may have booming economies but not much new construction, he told Ladders. âIf youâve got a strong local economy, good job growth, then youâre going to have lots of new people moving in. On the supply side, itâs whether or not developers are building enough new housing to meet that demand. So when thereâs a strong labor market but not a lot of new construction, thatâs where you see these rents rise.â Teachers are working more: between 1990 and 2017, the share of teachers who report working more than 50 hours a week increased by 43%.And the idea that teachers have the entire summer off is more of a myth, Salviati says. âOur research shows that the majority of teachers are working during the summer.â Whether itâs at their primary teaching job or at a different, second job is unclear.A recent wave of strikes in West Virginia, Oklahoma, Arizona, Los Angeles, Denver, and Oakland, among other cities, has made the need for better pay for teachers painfully clear. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Learn What Working Capital Is and Its Impact On Business
Learn What Working Capital Is and Its Impact On Business Learn What Working Capital Is and Its Impact On Business Working capital is the number of liquid assets that a company has on hand. Working capital is needed to pay for planned and unexpected expenses, meet the short-term obligations of the business, and to build the business. A lack of working capital makes it hard to attract investors or to get business loans or obtain credit. What is the Accounting Formula to Determine a Businessâ Working Capital? The accounting formula used to calculate the available working capital of a business is: Current Assets - Current Liabilities Working Capital Working capital can be reflected as a positive or negative number depending on how much debt the business is carrying. From an accounting standpoint, working capital comes from: Net income;Long-term loans (non-current liabilities);Sale of capital (non-current) assets; andFunds contributed by the owners and investors (stockholders). Working Capital is Required to Start and Grow a Business When you first start a business you need start-up working capital since the business is not yet making money to sustain itself. The number one reason most businesses fail during their first two years of operation is due to a lack of working capital. Having ample working capital not only helps you to meet your obligations, it is vital to growing your business. Ways To Raise Working Capital Every new business is faced with the challenge of raising working capital. Here are some of the ways you can raise working capital for your own new, or existing business: Borrow Money From Family or Friends: If you borrow from someone you have a close personal relationship with it is important that you still treat all financial actions as a business deal. Make sure all loans or investments from personal contacts are in writing. Debt Financing (Take Out a Loan): The types of loans available to you will largely depend upon your credit, the type of business you are starting, and the type of business structure you have decided upon. There are many sources of debt financing to consider including loads, microloans, and government sources. Raise Funds through Crowdsourcing: Many budding entrepreneurs have raised working capital through crowdsourcing. Groupon: When the economy crashed in 2008, many business owners used Groupon to generate quick cash. Be careful when using discount and voucher advertising platforms like Groupon because you could end up losing more money than it is worth in the long run.Grants: There are many federal and state programs that offer grants to new startups. Start by calling your local chamber of commerce and asking if there are any grants or incentive programs for starting a new business in your area. Working capital is the money you need to cover business expenses, meet short-term obligations, and to grow your business. Start-up capital is the money you need to start a business until it generates enough revenue to pay for itself. Start-up and working capital can come from loans, grants, investors, and partners, but many business women use their personal financial resources to fund their businesses.

Resume Lessons from a Recruiter
Resume Lessons from a Recruiter Resume Lessons from a Recruiter Resume Lessons from a Recruiter Recruiters receive tons of applications and there seem to be some patterns...time to make sure your resume isn't guilty of these faux pas.[TWEET] I have been a resume writer for a couple of years now. Lately, though, I've had the opportunity to be on the hiring side. A friend whose business is growing rapidly asked me to help out with office work, including some hiring, and it has been quite the learning experience; I believe this task has made me an even better resume writer and has taught me a great deal about resume dos and don'ts. The position I've been trying to fill is precise and the posted job description is very clear: Full Time Bookkeeping and Administrative Assistant with QuickBooks, advanced Excel experience, and meticulous data entry required. Within 48 hours of the posting we received about 40 resumes and they continued steadily after that. Here are some resume mistakes, facts, and cautionary resume help I can offer from what I saw: Approximately 95% of the resumes contain the words detail-oriented, excellent verbal and written communication or Able to communicate both verbally and in writing, and organized. You can bet not every single applicant really exhibits these characteristics and we plan to give each candidate a data entry and transcription test. My guess is very few will pass; some of the resumes themselves are barely coherent. These self-description statements are so prolific, we've taken to ignoring the summary altogether and go directly to the experience and background area to search for QuickBooks and Excel. I'll bet that's what recruiters at the larger companies do as well. Few people list their related skills at the top, or at all. The skills area can provide searchable key industry words for applicant tracking systems (ATS) and search engines and yet only one or two resumes show skills or include a skills area that lists specific skills for the position. I have actually had to dig for the information. Some applicants (about 20%) come from unrelated fields (manufacturing, elderly care, art, IT) and send resumes totally unrelated to this field without any reference to the job requirements. In terms of resume dos and don'ts, this is a huge don't. At least half the resumes don't include some of the major points in the job description. A few otherwise very qualified people omitted QuickBooks even though it turns out they have been using it for years. This has been quite the eye-opening experience. As a resume writer, when I close out a project, I remind my clients that the final version of their resume is in Word. This is important because position titles and job descriptions vary wildly company to company and organization to organization. Each posted position will contain very specific language and keywords that applicants can use - should use - on their resume. If the position requires AutoCAD, and you have used AutoCAD, list that as a skill. If the position requires data analysis and you have experience with data analysis, list that. This is why experienced resume writers advocate focusing your resume and career coaches tell clients to have more than one resume - each resume has a specific focus. What's the resume help take away here? Focus your resume to the position to which you are applying. This can be very annoying, admittedly a cumbersome task, especially if you're just out of college and looking at a variety of positions or you're not yet sure about your career path or you're changing careers. There are so many jobs that are similar with different titles. In the past, I've been the random sender as well. When you're looking for a job full time and you're sending out 20-30 resumes per day, you can get burned out. I get it. As your potential hirer, I suggest - actually, beg - you take an extra moment to read the job description and appropriately add important keywords. Now that I've experienced the hiring side of resumes, I see the power of resume mistakes and what's at stake. Seriously - your resume is the difference between a job and the shredder. How to Build Skills on You Own - The Muse
How to Build Skills on You Own - The Muse How to Build Skills on You Own At some companies, your boss will actively suggest that you attend conferences or provide opportunities for on-the-job training. But, there are also many jobs that rely on you to develop your skill set. Even if your organization wonât pay for (or doesnât offer) training, there are several things you can do to work your way toward that next promotion or remain competent and coveted in your field. And- better yet- most of them donât cost much at all. 1. Read (or Listen to) Books, Articles, and Forums Reading is fundamental, and whether you choose short blogs or books, it will make a difference. So instead of your daily browse of BuzzFeed, make a plan to read content that will educate, inform, and introduce you to new tools, skills, and people. To start, dedicate 30 minutes a day to learning about your industry from top thought leaders. When reading books, use the appendix and notes to see where the author got his information and how he is researching and learning in his field. You can also follow industry experts on LinkedIn or Twitter to see the content they are sharing, the companies they follow, or groups they are in. Finally, donât just look for people to follow- organizations also publish great information! Companies like WordPress have blogs and forums that you can read to learn about functional skills. Feel like you donât have the time to sit down and read? Listen to industry-specific podcasts on your commute, during a workout, or even while you do chores. For general advice, The Work Talk Show (which is currently on hiatus) has two years worth of interviews with professionals in various fields regarding how they get work done and what their favorite apps are. 2. Join a Professional Organization Professional organizations are great resources that too often go overlooked. Many provide training and conferences, connect professionals with mentors who can offer advice, and give you a bit of validation in your field to boot. In the PR world, for instance, thereâs the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) or The PR Council. Fundraisers have The Association of Fundraising Professionals, and someone in IT could join the Association of Information Technology Professionals. Most fields have numerous organizations- a national group (or sometimes more than one), regional groups, and so forth. Not only will you have access to top industry news, but also to the people influencing that news. Itâs a win-win! You can also join informal groups through Facebook and LinkedIn. In this setting, people often feel less intimidated asking questions or participating in discussions- so no matter what youâre interested in learning more about, ask away! Related: 5 Ways to Get the Most Out of LinkedIn Groups 3. Take Classes Thanks to the internet, itâs never been easier to go to class. One resource is Coursera, an online platform for taking classes from top universities like Northwestern and Duke. When you sign up for class, the description includes an estimate of time you will need per week. I took a class called âUnderstanding Media by Understanding Googleâ from Professor Owen R. Youngman at Northwestern, and it included the opportunity to meet up with some of the local students at the university for a live class (hello, networking opportunity!). Another option is to listen to class lectures online through Appleâs iTunes U. And platforms like Udacity, Udemy, Skillshare, and Lynda offer short lessons on almost everything imaginable, delivered by experts. Get creative and set up your own curriculum through books, podcasts- you can even assign yourself homework! Just remember, your goal is to hone in on a skill or gain expertise in a certain subject matter. It can be tempting to take classes in everything, but try to start with one area of emphasis. Related: 50 (Cheap!) Professional Development Classes Anyone Can Take 4. Attend Events Even if your company doesnât sponsor learning events, other organizations will. For example, Astek, a B2B web design company in Chicago, hosts monthly âThink-n-Drinkâ events, where a panel of local experts discuss trends in marketing and graphic design. Hubspot, a national company, hosts events about UX design and product marketing in cities such as Dallas, Denver, and San Francisco. Check out Meetup or Eventbrite, to find company-sponsored events in your area and industry, or look into nearby co-working spaces, which also tend to host functions regularly. Oh, and if you miss out on a local event, you can often find notes on SlideShare, another great resource for learning! 5. Look Around Your Office Even if your companyâs budget is tight, donât underestimate the opportunity to learn some new skills at the place you go to work every day. Look around the office and see what your colleagues are working on. Are there projects or issues youâre interested in learning more about? Ask another team member or department if you could help out on an assignment- or even shadow someone for a day. For instance, letâs say youâre tasked with writing blog posts, but the marketing team is responsible for getting them out into the world. You can learn more about SEO and social media- for free!- just by sitting down with a teammate over coffee or lunch. 6. Volunteer OK, so your company may not want you to take a project requiring a skill you have minimal experience with, but often times volunteer organizations are in serious need of additional bandwidth, and OK with you learning as you go. Plus, different organizations have different methodologies, so, working somewhere new- yes, even for free- can teach you new ways of doing things. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that â67% of middle-skill jobs demand proficiencyâ in basic spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel and SAP SE. A lot of nonprofits use these simple programs, and this could be your chance to advance your abilities. And, of course, help out your community. Your skill set is your responsibility- not your company's. For best results, pick an area of expertise, develop a plan, and consistently practice.

Andrew Ferebees seven rules of success
Andrew Ferebee's seven rules of success Andrew Ferebee's seven rules of success What are the rules of success?Rule #1: Define success for yourself ⦠everything else is bullsh-tPlain and simple. The first rule of success is that you must create your own definition of success. It doesnât matter what you want to do or how you want to do it (so long as itâs in the realm of ethics). Success is outcome you want to achieve in your life.If you donât want a 7-figure business, fast cars, and models on a yacht thatâs fine, do your own thing. If you do want that, then by all means, go for it.Ultimately success is being able to do the things you want to do, when you want to do them, with whom you want to do them.Define it for yourself and realize that everything your friends, family, and society has told you is b.s.Rule #2: Sustained success requires sustained energy (aka health)All greatness requires one thing ⦠Energy. If you donât have the energy to wake up early, pull long hours, and think on your feet, you wonât be successful ⦠Period. The first step that y ou must take on your path to success is mastering your energy.Exercise daily, sleep 8+ hours, eat clean and healthy foods. This is the first step to productivity and success.Rule #3: Show me your friends and Iâll show you your futureWho you spend time with is who you will become. If you spend time with great people who are on a mission and regularly achieve big goals, youâll become one of them.If you spend time with losers who have no work ethic, motivation, or ambition, you will become one of them.So make your choice. But choose wisely.Rule #4: Operate from an abundance mindsetThere are only two mindsets you can have in any given situation, abundance or scarcity. When youâre operating from an abundance mindset you believe that there is plenty to go around and that you can achieve your dreams without screwing over the world. For example â¦Abundance Mindset: Wow! There are a lot of people at this party. Iâm sure I can find a beautiful girl/guy to go him with.Scarcity Mindset: Wow ! There are a lot of people at this party. I donât stand a chance against men/women like this.Abundance Mindset: Wow! There are so many new businesses being started. Itâs awesome because thereâs more economic growth and an opportunity for me to achieve my dreams.Scarcity Mindset: Wow! There are so many new businesses being started. I donât stand a chance against the competition.Do you catch my drift? When you operate from abundance you will see and attract opportunities where others only see and attract obstacles.Rule #5: Express gratitude for what you already haveYour life is amazing.I donât care if you believe me or not ⦠It is.The fact that you can read this answer right now proves this.If youâd been born 200 years ago, you would have no access to reliable health care, a slim chance of rising out of your socioeconomic status, and very few options when it comes to business and mate selection.2018 is a year of opportunity and abundance.I donât care how hard things ar e for you right now you have something to be grateful for.So express it on a daily basis and watch the magic unfold.Rule #6: Be present and enjoy the momentMost ambitious and driven people are future focused. They spend most of their time thinking about what they want and how they will get it.This is great â¦But it comes at a cost. When you are living in the past or the future you are not present. You are not truly alive and you are not experiencing THIS moment. To live fully you must embrace the present.Have a plan for the future, learn from your past, but live in the present.I like to say that life should be lived 80% in the present moment, 10% in the past, and 10% in the future. The more present you are, the more you will enjoy life and the more opportunities will come your way.Rule #7: Take actionWithout action you have nothing. You can read all the books, ask all the questions, attend all the seminars and it will all be in vain if you donât act on what youâve learned. The ultima te rule of success is that it requires action.Screw the Secret!Taking action is the ONLY way to get the life of your dreams. So shut this tab out and go do what you need to do.Success awaits.Stay Grounded,This post first appeared on Quora.

Thinking patterns and mental habit loops
Thinking patterns and mental habit loops Thinking patterns and mental habit loops The late historians Will and Ariel Durant spent four decades of their life studying, compiling, and writing the history of Western civilization. The product of their efforts, The Story of Civilization, went on to fill four million words, across 10,000 pages, divided into 11 separate books. After finishing the last one, they then took on an arguably more daunting task: to summarize all they had learned into a 100 pages in The Lessons of History. Itâs an incomplete and generalizing attempt, no doubt, but it is also one of the most densely-packed sources of modern wisdom available to us.There are many trends and patterns to be found in the past, and the Durants do a commendable job of highlighting them. The essence of their view, however, can be summarized by the following sentence from their short book:âThe only real revolution is in the enlightenment of the mind and the improvement of character, the only real emancipation is individual, and the only real revolutionists are philosoph ers and saints.âIn many ways, the Durants believed that despite all that has and continues to change in our external environment, the real battle is still internal, and real change isnât produced until we face our minds and our thoughts. There is a fair degree of nuance that needs to be accounted for with a statement like that, and it ties into larger questions of what progress is and how subjects relate to objects, but the fact that our thoughts - and their ability to change our minds - play a pivotal role in our experience of reality is self-evident in ways that are common-sense.How we think affects everything from our ability to solve problems to how we understand meaning and value and purpose. The Durants made it their lifeâs work to improve this ability in the average person by disseminating information - mostly history and philosophy - in culture. But information alone doesnât make our thinking better; we also have to understand and update the way that the mind proce sses this information.A mind that is stuck in habit loopsBased on popular psychology literature, some thinkers have codified the way that we form habits into a simple loop: a trigger, a routine, and a reward. We first see something in our environment that sets off the trigger; the trigger leads to a routine we have internalized based on our past interactions in such an environment; finally, a reward at the end reinforces said routine. If you observe this in your daily life, youâll see that itâs roughly right. Our brain is a pattern-seeking survival machine, and habits are how it ensures that we donât always have to think too hard about what to do when familiar situations arise, letting us conserve energy. When it comes to the human mind, there are still no concrete theories of how thought emerges, but we know that it plays a pivotal role in facilitating how we interact with the information that the Durants, for example, weâre trying to impart on us. It has different forms and d ifferent shapes. In the same way that we form habits of action relating to our environment, we also form habits of thought when it comes how we think about the world. We are all born into a reality in which - at first, at least - we canât even distinguish between our own separateness from the world. With time, however, we start to recognize patterns around us, and we internalize these patterns - like we do habits - so that we can reuse them in the future. Usually, if a pattern persists in our mental habits, it means that it is valuable in some sense. But this is only the case if we apply that pattern to the right information. One of the reasons that itâs so hard to change our mind about things is that our brains are stuck in these mental habit loops, which only look at the information from a singular point of view. They have learned something in one context, and they mistakenly apply it to other ones, mixing up the triggers that lead to routine thoughts. We are all capable of ove rpowering these habit loops, of course, but itâs very easy and productive to always have them operating as the default mode.To think well, our job is to be aware of their limitations and not to let them.Diversifying your thinking patternsEach of us face different challenges, at different times, in different ways, based both on our biology and our unique cultural upbringing. No two people think exactly the same way because no two people have lived exactly the same lives. We are all a product of the different thinking patterns that emerged as a result of our experience of interacting with reality. In fact, these different thinking patterns (mostly produced from our mental habit loops) are, in large part, what makes you, you; me, me. The identity we each have is born from the convergence of all of these patterns. They create what we call our subjective experience. One of the things that the Durants are presumably getting to with their quote is that even though we have continued to see s o much external change throughout history, it doesnât truly make a difference unless we calibrate our internal, subjective experience with that objective, external environment. Our subjective experience is limited and using it - and the thinking patterns that create it - as the baseline for understanding the world is a limited way to go through life, and it biases us in the wrong direction. At its core, a thinking pattern is an implicit rule of thumb for the way we connect the different aspects of the reality around us. Given the complexity of this reality, the more diverse our trained thinking patterns and the better refined the associated triggers, the more accurately we will be able to interact with the information around us.Because thinking patterns emerge from the mental habit loops we form as a response to experience, the only way to diversify them is to seek out new and conflicting encounters, whether that be through books, unfamiliar environments, or even hypothetical thou ght-games.Outside of extreme external circumstances, any time we are struggling to solve some problem or lacking a sense of satisfaction and meaning, itâs due to the fact that the current thinking patterns that we are using to interact with reality are not adequately suited for the job.Instead, we have to remodel the form and the shape of these patterns so that they can better fit with the form and the shape of the issue at hand. The takeawayAt birth, we are born with our unique, innate biological machinery, but we donât come with complete knowledge of how to use it.As time goes on, however, bit by bit, things start to make more sense. We realize what food is good for us, we learn to avoid things that are painful, and we start to get attached to those who take care of us.With even more time, we develop fully concrete distinctions between the different objects around us and how we, as subjects, are to interact with them. What keeps this process going is our pattern-seeking brain. I t forms both habits of action and habits of thought that it embeds into our conscious and subconscious memories to reduce cognitive load. One of the problems with this, however, is that itâs really easy for us to get stuck in mental habit loops that donât accurately assess the situation at hand, leading to both problems of comprehension and satisfaction. To counteract this, we have to be intentional in diversifying our thinking patterns. We have to learn to recognize when we are falling into a mismatched pattern of thought, and we have to then use that information to update how we make connections between the objects in our environment. To say that all issues can be solved with a shift in thinking patterns ignores the larger picture, but there is a truth to what the Durants learned from history:How we think about what is happening around us is arguably more important than what is actually happening around us.Want to think and live smarter?
